Itinerary

Welcome to the Imperial City of Cusco! Our transfer will be waiting for you at the Cusco airport ready to take you to your hotel.

The rest of the day will be free to enjoy at your own pace. We recommend taking a stroll through the town’s charming cobbled streets and visiting the local San Pedro market. Use this day to acclimatize to the higher altitude without overexerting yourself!

Your briefing for the Inca Trail trek will take place at 6:30 PM at the Alpaca Expeditions headquarters. You will meet your guide and fellow hikers during your briefing. We will use this time to register as well.

Accommodation: Tierra Viva Centro or similar
Meals: Not included
Tickets: Not required

Your guide will pick you up at the lobby of your hotel in Cusco , at 8 am. You will be taken on a road that winds around the mountains north of Cusco. On the way, we will stop at a famous point known as El Mirador. From there, we will be able to see the Sacred Valley and gain an insight into Inca history. The Sacred Valley was one of the main settlement areas of the Incas. There is an unusual abundance of fertile plains in this high Andean area. You will also witness vast contour terraces and irrigation canals left behind by the Incas.

Later, we will go to the ruins of Pisac. Here, you will witness and learn about the Inca culture. You will see amazing stone art and impressive agricultural terraces. After exploring, we’ll return to the lower town of Pisac to stop at a bustling craft market. After spending some time walking the market looking for bargains, we will meet for lunch at a local Andean restaurant. This meal is not included in the tour, so if you prefer a different restaurant, just tell your tour guide.

After lunch, we will drive along the Urubamba River towards the town of Ollantaytambo. Once we arrive at Ollantaytambo, we will visit the ruins, an important Inca construction area, built during the heyday of the Incas. This is an extraordinary Inca site because you can find rock formations that represent the Inca god, Wiracocha.

We will spend the night in Ollantaytambo to start our Inca Trail early the next day.

Accommodation: Hotel Pakaritampu or similar
Meals: Breakfast at the hotel
Tickets: All Inclusive

Alpaca Expeditions will pick you up from wherever you are in Cusco, Urubamba or Ollantaytambo. The pick up from Cusco will be from 4 to 4:30 am, from Urubamba from 5:30 to 6 am, and if you stay in Ollantaytambo, you can get some sleep with your pick up from 6:30 to 7:00 pm I AM. These times will be confirmed at your briefing as they can fluctuate based on where you are staying. We will take you to Casa Porter which is located in Ollantaytambo after a delicious breakfast prepared by your cook, your guide will introduce you to his team of porters.

Then we will go to Km 82, we will pass through the first checkpoint of the Inca Trail to start our trek. Make sure you have your original passport with you to enter the Inca Trail. The first 2 hours of the trek are relatively easy as we make our way to our first Inca site. Patallacta is an old Inca checkpoint for access to Machu Picchu .

From Patallacta it is another 2 hour hike to our lunch stop. After lunch, we will walk for another 2 and a half hours until we reach the camp for the first night in Ayapata (3300 meters). In this last section we pass through 2 small communities. If you want to buy some energy drink, snacks, or basic necessities that you have forgotten like batteries, you can do it here. We will arrive at our camp at 5:00 PM. After settling in for a bit, you can relax and have a hot drink and snack with your team of porters, chefs, and guides. At 7:30 pm, your dinner will be ready and afterward you can get a well-deserved rest.

We will stop here to rest and take a quick tour. Later, we will be able to observe the sunset over the Vilcabamba mountain range. Then it’s just another 20 minutes until we stop for the night at our second campsite Chaquicocha (Lago Seco, 3600 meters). After dinner, if you are not too tired, we can do some stargazing and we will point out the fascinating Inca constellations. In the magnificent sky of the southern hemisphere, away from all artificial lighting, this sky is something to behold!

Completing Day 2 and starting Day 3 certainly deserves a pat on the back! We will start early again, waking up at 6:30 am to begin what is commonly considered the most beautiful day on the entire Inca Trail. We walk for 2 hours along what we like to call “Inca flat” (gradual inclines) and we begin to enter the jungle, known as the Cloud Forest. While we walk, we will have the opportunity to see Salkantay, the second highest snow peak in the Sacred Valley, and a fantastic panoramic view of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Towards the end of the Inca flats, we begin to make our way up to the last peak at Phuyupatamarka (3600 meters) from where we will have excellent views of the Urubamba River. Down the valley, we have our first view of the Machu Picchu mountain, but the site itself is still hidden. From Phuyupatamarka it is a 3 hour walk up a flight of stairs to our last camp, near Wiñay Wayna (forever young). Wiñay Wayna is the most spectacular Inca site on the trail after Machu Picchu and the most popular camp due to its proximity to Machu Picchu. During the descent, we visit 2 Inca ruins, Phuyupatamarka (Pueblo en las Nubes) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). We arrive at our camp around 1:00 PM to have lunch. We visited 2 Inca ruins, Phuyupatamarka (Pueblo en las Nubes) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). We arrive at our camp around 1:00 PM to have lunch. We visited 2 Inca ruins, Phuyupatamarka (Pueblo en las Nubes) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). We arrive at our camp around 1:00 PM to have lunch.

Then we will relax so that you are ready for your last day at Machu Picchu. Around 4:30 pm, your guide will give you a brief orientation and you will visit the Inca ruins of Wiñay Wayna for an hour and a half there. Your guide will explain the importance of the site and combine all the information provided during the walk. In this way you will be fully prepared for your visit to Machu Picchu the next day. We like to pamper our guests as we enjoy our latest feast with the porters and chefs. It is an Inca Trail tradition to organize a ceremony at night to introduce the team to the tourists again. This is to say thank you for a great job done (if you want to give them advice you can do so right now).

Your guide will offer to meet you in the town of Aguas Calientes to enjoy your last lunch at a local restaurant. This is optional and not included. At lunch, your guide will hand you the train tickets, so if you decide to skip them, make arrangements to get them before dropping you off at Machu Picchu. Unless you make arrangements for an upgraded train, we will book the Expedition class train that leaves Aguas Calientes at 3:20 pm or 4:22 pm Please be sure to be on the platform at least 30 minutes early. This will be a 2 hour train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy (depending on which train you take), where an Alpaca driver will meet you and take you back to the city on our bus, then drop you off at your hotel.

We will pick you up for the Rainbow Mountain hike at 4:00 am to 4:30 am from any hotel, Airbnb or hostel in Cusco . It will be a 2½ hour drive to the trailhead; we will arrive around 7 am. Here at the trailhead our chef will prepare a delicious breakfast including coffee, hot chocolate, tea, bread, fruit salad, eggs and hot drinks. Cusco’s elevation is 3,300 m / 11,300 ft, and the trailhead called Phulawasipata is at 4,200 m / 14,300 ft.

Cusco weather is usually quite cold, and the trailhead is even colder, so it’s early in the morning. Be sure to bring a warm jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves.

After breakfast, we will hike for approximately 2 hours uphill to Rainbow Mountain Range. At a slower pace, it could be 2¾ hours, or if you’re really fit fast and acclimatized well, some people can do it in 1½ hours. The hike includes some short breaks where the guide will explain important information about the mountains and the geography of the area. You may have the chance to see some of the locals, including the llamas and alpacas that frequent this area.

The trail itself is quite wide and useful for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. The hike is best during the dry season as the trails are not paved. The trail can be a bit dusty and in the rainy season it can be slippery as it can be wet. However, with good waterproof walking shoes and trekking poles you will be fine. Here’s your chance to see why Rainbow Mountain has become an Instagrammer’s delight according to CNBC !

Upon arrival at the top of Rainbow Mountain, around 9 a.m. The summit stands at an elevation of 6,384 m / 20,944 ft, making it one of the highest mountains in Peru.

After giving you some time to take some treasured photos, your guide will tell you some interesting facts about this fascinating place, like why the colors? – And he will also share some details about the Inkan history. A few last photos of this spectacular mountain and we will begin our descent. We do this a little differently than other groups. Instead of walking the same route as them, we walked to a viewpoint to see the Red Valley and continue our hike.

This valley is the icing on the cake, and many of our hikers say it’s even better than Rainbow Mountain! It’s about 2 1/2 hours downhill from Montaña Arcoiris , to the end of the trail, which is close to where we started the hike. Here you will enjoy a fresh meal prepared by your chef, including cold drinks, appetizers, soup and the main course.
After lunch, it will be another 2½-hour drive to Cusco, where we will drop you off at your hotel around 5:30-6:00 p.m.

Your guide will check with you on the next day’s activities.
