We will pick you up between 4:00 am to 4:30 am from any hotel, Airbnb and/or hostel in Cusco. It will be a trip of approximately 2 hours and a half until the beginning of the trekking. We will arrive around 7 am.
At the beginning of the trek, our chef will prepare a delicious breakfast, which includes coffee, hot chocolate, tea, bread, fruit salad, eggs and hot drinks.
Cusco’s elevation is 3300m/11,300ft, and the start of the trek called Phulawasipata is at 4200m/14,300ft. The weather in Cusco is usually quite cold, and the beginning of the tour is even colder, because it is very early in the morning. Be sure to bring a warm jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves. After breakfast, we will hike about 2 hours uphill to the Rainbow Mountain Range. At a slower pace it could be 2¾ hours, or if you are really fit and well acclimatized some people can do it in 1 1/2 hours.
The hike includes some short breaks where the guide will explain important information about the mountains and the geography of the area. You might get a chance to see some of the locals, including the llamas and alpacas that frequent this area. The path itself is quite wide and useful for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. The hike is best during the dry season as the paths are not paved. The road can be a bit dusty, and in the rainy season, it can be slippery due to humidity. However, with good waterproof trekking shoes and trekking poles, you’ll be fine.
Upon your arrival at the top of the Rainbow Mountain, around 9-10:00 am, you will have approximately 1 hour to explore the spectacular views of the surroundings: valleys, mountains and to see the highest glacial mountain in Cusco – Ausangate , whose summit is at an elevation of 6,384 m / 20,944 ft, making it one of the highest mountains in Peru.
After giving you some time to take some treasured photos, your guide will tell you some interesting facts about this fascinating place, like why the colors are. – and will also share some details about the history of the Incas. You will be able to take some last photos of this spectacular mountain and we will begin our descent.
We do this a little differently than other groups. Instead of walking the same route as them, we walk to a viewpoint to see the Red Valley and continue our hike. This valley is the icing on the cake and many of our hikers say that it is even better than the rainbow mountain! It’s about 2 1/2 hours mostly downhill from Rainbow Mountain, to the end of the trail, which is close to where we started the hike.
Here you can enjoy a fresh meal prepared by your chef, including hot and cold drinks, appetizers, soup and the main course. After lunch, it will be another 2 and a half hours by car to Cusco, where we will drop you off at your hotel around 5:30 to 6:00 pm.
